The cabin

Slow down and savor simple Up North living.

Escape to the Loon House, a cozy, rustic 2-bedroom, 1-bath cabin nestled among the pines on Thunder Lake between Outing and Remer, MN. Enjoy summer lake days, colorful fall hikes, and nearby ATV/UTV trails and hunting. Winter brings ice fishing, snowmobiling and cozy nights, while spring invites fresh-air adventures. Whatever the season, slow down, reconnect, and savor simple Up North living.

Exposed wood ceilings and beams give the Loon House its warm, rustic character. Settle into the living area with a book or board game, share a meal at the dining table, or enjoy an easy morning before heading out.

Outside: deck, outdoor dining area, grill, hammock, lakefront fire pit, shoreline and dock — explore the lake by canoe, kayak or pedal boat. There's even a supper club, Deer Haven on Thunder, right on the lake — drive up or boat up. Ping-pong in the (unfinished) garage.

Guests tell us what they love most is the peace and quiet — and the views. Watch the sun set over Thunder Lake from the shoreline or the fire pit, and keep an eye out for wildlife: white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, black bears and the occasional coyote all pass through.

Before you book

Good to know

A few honest notes so your stay is exactly what you expect.

  • No pets

Pets of any kind are not permitted on the property. This helps reduce allergen exposure and protects the health and comfort of our family and guests with pet allergies. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Self-catering stay

Linens, towels, basic cookware and starter supplies (toilet paper, paper towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner, dish soap, garbage bags) are provided. There's no ice maker, washer, dryer or dishwasher. The nearest laundromats are Turtle Town Laundry in Longville and Emily Wash in Emily. Ice cube trays are in the freezer, and we fill at least two before you arrive. Bagged ice is available at Bigfoot Gas & Gifts, Remer Junction, TC's Foods and Dollar General in Remer.

  • Seasonal amenities

The dock and window A/C are unavailable from mid-October through mid-May. The hammock, kayaks, pedal boat, canoe, life jackets, pool noodles, deck furniture and grill are put away after the first snowfall through April. Message us to confirm a seasonal amenity for your dates.

  • Available on request

Some items (baby monitor, pack 'n play/travel crib, high chair) are available on request — just ask before your stay. The ping pong table is always available — it's in the unfinished, unheated garage, so play when the temperature is comfortable for you.

  • Boats

The owner's boat and boat lift aren't included. You're welcome to bring and dock your own boat at your own risk.

  • Getting here

The Loon House is on Thunder Lake between Outing and Remer, just off Minnesota Highway 6. Full directions, driveway and parking details are shared once your booking is confirmed. Self check-in with a keypad — your door code and check-in details are sent 24–48 hours before arrival.

  • Parking & shared driveway

Part of the driveway (garage to road) is shared with the neighbor. Please park in front of the garage or alongside the home. There's room for at least 4 vehicles and 1–2 trailers. Trailer parking can be tricky with the driveway layout — if a trailer won't fit, there may be a spot across the street available with owner approval, so please message us ahead of time if you're bringing one.

  • Bathroom

The bathroom has a shower only — no bathtub.

  • Propane

The gas grill comes with propane — up to one tank per stay.

  • Firewood

One bundle is ready to go in the fire pit, and up to two wrapped bundles beside it are included per stay. Extra bundles are $7 each on site, paid by Venmo. Please don't cut any trees or branches.

  • Winter parking

In winter the driveway is plowed and a path is shoveled from the driveway to the front door. The parking spot directly to the right of the cabin isn't available in winter — please park in front of the garage or in another plowed area you're comfortable with.

  • ATVs & snowmobiles

You're welcome to ride your ATV, UTV or snowmobile right from the property — please be mindful not to tear up the driveway or yard.

  • Wildlife

Exterior cameras occasionally capture black bears, coyotes, deer, wild turkeys and raccoons passing through the Loon House property. Please observe wildlife from a safe distance, never feed or approach it, supervise children outdoors, and securely store food and trash. Keep all trash inside the cabin or in the garage trash bin — never outside.

  • Accessibility

The Loon House isn't wheelchair or mobility accessible. There are stairs to the upstairs loft, a hill down to the lake and dock, and a gentler slope from the garage down to the cabin. Please keep this in mind if anyone in your group has limited mobility.

  • Rustic open-beam design

Some interior walls stop below the ceiling, and Bedroom 2 is an open loft (no door) overlooking the dining and living area, so sound and light carry between spaces. Bedroom 1 and the bathroom have doors.

  • “What a Gem! This rental exceeded our expectations. The cabin was immaculate and spotless. Very cozy, spacious and extremely well stocked. Beds comfortable and probably the nicest linens I have ever encountered in a rental. The owner has truly thought of everything! It’s the perfect spot to unwind and relax with the family. The proximity to the lake was fantastic. My kids especially loved the lake front views while sitting around the fire to roast marshmallows. Thunder Lake is stunning and just a short boat ride to a great dinner or ice cream treats. A special shout out to Kim - she was the ultimate host. She had planned for our little ones without us even asking for any extra amenities. Can’t wait to book a return trip!”
